FOOD&DRINK

Going to Prague you have to try local beer and food. Why do you think the Czechs would managed to drink the most of the beer in the world without anything to bite to. Czech beer and Czech food...for some the best combination ever. Eating out could be very nice experience while in Prague. But it´s necessary to choose those places, where the prices still apply more to local people rather than to tourists. All over Prague you may find restaurants offering typical Czech dishes and local beer. Restaurants in the center are generally made for tourist and therefore it reflex on higher prices. Of course it´s nice to eat in the city centre, close to the main squares, but why to pay extra money for something you can get half price or even cheaper elsewhere not far away from all that. I sometimes don´t understand how much people spent for eating out in Prague still thinking it´s a fair deal. Generally in Prague, and in most of the places you go, is good to follow the locals. Where they eat is always good and cheap food and drinks. Believe me it´s easier than you think especially in Prague! I have made a list, further bellow, of my suggestions and tips where to eat and drink. Feel free to comment on those or ad any further suggestions. Those my picks will guarantee you good typical local food with good beer to accompany your eating out experience.

BEER

Czech beer suppose to be one of the world´s best. Also high consummation of beer still keeps the prices of beer very low and in some cases could it´s price be almost same as water price!
One of the most typical drink in Prague is than naturally beer. You find people drinking it anytime throughout the day. Not surprise there than, seeing local people having their lunch break, drinking beer and than going back to work. At night is almost a must if in the pub. Czechs are very good in making their beers and the world´s beer brands like Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Krusovice and many others are make there. Probably Prague´s best and for sure most recognized beer is Staropramen (Old Spring). It´s brewery can be found in Prague´s part called Smichov.
In Prague you can also find many of local breweries. Those are smaller places making their own beer. Normally they are part of the restaurant, so food is served there too. You should try some, as their authentic beer is most of the time sold only on their premises, making your experience even more special.

FOOD

Like every country even Czech Republic has it´s own typical food. In general, as mentioned earlier, local food is quite rich on taste and also calories. Most of them come with dumplings (white bread, if you want), which is made of either bread or potatoes, boiled in hot water untill is ready and than served with stew or any kind or sauce and ofcourse meat. Meat is served with almost all the dishes. No wonder than that czechs are in average quite overweighted. And comes from one of the locals.
If you go to the restaurant always ask the waiter for the day menu. This is normaly first page in the menu or separete piece of paper in the menu. It´s called  Hotova Jidla and its a menu of the day, including some typical dishes. Food comes very quick and the prices are very good too. Only problem could be that you would need your waiter to do the translation as in many restaurants they don´t translate those as it changes every day.
Let´s just mention some of the most typical dishes you should try while in Prague.

Svickova - vegetable stew made of the root vegetables (parsley root, celery, carrot), cooked for about three hours (the real one anyway) and served with dumplings and roast larded sliced beef . In the restaurants they also ad cranberry sauce, lemon and cream topping to be mixed with the sauce to give it sweeter touch to it. Very good dish and I personaly recommend it!

Svickova

Vepro-Knedlo-Zelo - this is in translation pork, dumpling and cabbage (white or red). This dish is than nothing else than Roast pork with dumplings and Sauerkraut (cabbage). By many this is the most typical Czech food and for sure the most popular.

Vepro Knedlo Zelo

Now something for those who don´t eat meat. For vegeterians there is huge selection to choose from so if you were in doubts, no worry. Most of the salads and pasta dishes can be ordered from most of the restaurants. I would like to highlight some of the vegetarian typical dishes you can order in most of the places.

Smazeny syr - which is fried cheese in breadcrumbs usualy served with boilded potatoes or french fries (chips) and tartare sauce. This is normaly quite cheap dish which can be good vegetarian alternative to it´s meat version of wiener schnitzel (escalope coated in breadcrumbs). Some places could have fried cauliflower instead of the cheese.

Smazeny Syr

Plnene knedliky - Dumplings filled with peach, plums, blueberries, strawberries or any other fruits. This dish is more to people with a sweet taste. Dish would please especially kids but the size could be a bit too much for them to finish. Not all the restaurants do this dish so check before. You could get a meat version of those too.

Ovocne Knedliky

As you can see locals like to eat quite rich food. Now...I have mentioned about those travellers who finish up paying for their meals ridiculous prices, especially in the town center. Bellow I have than included three places I would recommend you as local to go to eat. All of them are very close to town centre so you don´t have to travel far while visiting the town. All of those have their menu translated to english and german so no miss understandings there. Enjoy!

Restaurant Kozicka

This is one of my favourite restaurants. You can find typical Czech dishes here as well as another dishes like steaks, fish, pasta and salads. Name of the restaurant in translation is at the Goat, which you will notice once you at the entrance of the restaurant. Restaurant is in basement and looks like old wine celler with it's red brick wall. Staff is friendly and atmoshphere is good. Food is a bit more expensive but still very reasonable even for locals. This restaurant is busy almost evey night but unless you coming in a large group, reservations are no needed. Try their hermelin cheese with banana and cranberries, with 1 liter Krusovice ''tuplak'' beer!
