THE CHEAPEST WAY TO / FROM THE AIRPORT
Never ending issue in Prague are those doggy looking taxi drivers, which many of them don’t even put their taxi meters on, trying to overcharge you a big time. Especially during the night…"poor lost tourist which can’t find their way back to where they stay…let them feel the warm welcome by overcharging them a bit so they have something to remember...". Don’t worry it happens to locals sometimes too. Here are than some tips and tricks how to get from the airport to the town centre with no need of hireing the cab.
If you guys had a long flight and don’t really feel like using a local transport to the town center, than you have two options here:
AAA Radiotaxi |
Either use taxi outside from AAA Radiotaxi or from Airport cars they both have fixed prices to the town ranging around 500 kc (20 euros) to a bit more depending where in the town you want to be dropped off.
Cheaper way is than to use a public transport, which is quite reliable in many ways. Bus stop is just outside the Terminal 1 or just in front of arrivals outside of Terminal 2. Buy your ticket (cash only 26 CZK) from ticket machine at the bus stop or if you can´t figurate how, than direct from the driver at few CZK more (30 CZK). Ticket is valid one hour once validated, which is plenty of time to get you to the centre of the town….
Busses run in every 10-20 minutes depending on if you traveling on the weekday of weekend.
Bus 119 - Airport Bus |
Get bus number 119 to nearest Metro station called Dejvicka ( A - green line). The bus stops quite often on the way but you still get there from the airport in about 25 minutes. From there you have direct Metro connection to the city center.
During the summer months (June to September) check the promotion from Czech Railways
as they run a shuttle bus and may have a special deals to get you from the airport to the town center and back for very reasonable price.
I would suggest for those ones with no budget or those just feeling a bit tired, lazy or not just feeling like spending an extra time in the local transport after your flight to just consider taking one of those above mentioned taxi companies from the airport. The rest of you on the budget this is the best and the cheapest way to get you to the town center…
PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN PRAGUE
Once you arrived from the airport to the Metro, Bus or Tram station, check your ticket you have bought at the airport and see how long you have left. Prague has fairly good transport system and all parts of Prague can be easily reachable at any time of the day or night. In case your ticket had expired, another one can be purchased at almost any stop from one of those ticket vending machines. Ticket prices are as bellow:TICKET / PASS TYPE | Adult | Student | |

Prague is quite easy to get around due to its size. As a local I would recommend using most of the time Metro (Underground), as the fastest transport. Trams are pretty good and reliable too and run all night long due to the night tram service.
There are 3 lines in Prague´s Metro. Green (A line), Yellow (B line) and Red (C line). All 3 are connected to each other in like triangle, where centre is. Local Metro runs from 5am to just after 12pm. Normally last Metro leaves 10 min after midnight from the last stop, so if you in the centre it gets there in about 00:20. Most of the tickets inspectors can be found in the triangle center during the busy hours (between 4pm – 7pm) and they always accompanied by police, so you can spot them far in advance. In case you don’t have a ticket the fine of 700kc (about 30 euro) will be charged at the spot. Tickets are also available from any Tabacco / Newspaper shops anywhere in town or inside the Metro during the working hours. Remember to always validate your ticket before you take the escalators into the Metro, or inside the Tram or Bus, inserting the ticket to one of the yellow machines. It prints the ticket with the date and time from when it counts the time down on your ticket validity.
Metro (Underground) Map |
Main Prague´s Metro stations and also the changing stations for another Metro´s lines are Mustek (A – B lines), Mustek (A – C lines), and Florenc, where main Bus station (B – C lines) is. Main train station in on Green (A line) and very close to the Main Wenceslav´s square (Vaclavske namesti). Another important station is then on Red (C line) called Nadrazi Holesovice. Bus to or from the airport will drop / pick you up at Dejvicka (A - Green line). The rest you work out as it’s not difficult at all, especially if you coming from the larger city than Prague.
After Metro´s operational hours, there is night bus or tram service which I have already mentioned as very reliable. I would recommend trams as they tend to drive more in the city´s center. Taking the night transport, make sure you have a ticket as there have been lately lots of inspections checking on them.
